Managua and Esteli, Nicaragua

Nicaragua defies expectations. In the midst of its severe poverty - the run-down houses and the worn-out streets is a spirit that is hard to overlook. The people, with their innocent smiles and overwhelming warmth, will capture your heart. They carry themselves with a strength that's not born of wealth, but of spirit - a spirit that's been shaped by the adversity they've faced for generations. The sometimes disturbing military presence around Nicaragua, often seen more as a symbol of control than protection, is contrasted by the unity of the people who make the most of what they have. They hold on to their joy as if it's their most powerful tool. Nicaragua captured my heart back in 2017 and a little piece of it will always live there in solidarity with its people.
