An Afternoon at The Pen

I spent an afternoon touring and photographing the Eastern State Penitentiary. Located in Fairmount (PA), it's the world's first penitentiary and was an experiment in justice reform. The facility opened in 1829, received National Historic Landmark designation in 1965, officially closed its doors in 1970 and in 1996 was included among the one hundred most important endangered landmarks in the world by the World Monument Fund.
